Which Pump?

Which Pump Type Should I Choose?

In today’s market place, choosing a water pump may seem to be a daunting task.  However, when a person understands how pumps are classified, choosing a pump choice is fairly simple.  Beside pump classifications under many brand names, engine types and portability (physical size & weight), categorizing a pump by volume and pressure is useful.  The following two volume/pressure categories need to be considered:

Rule of Thumb: deliver water at 50–70 psi at the Fire Nozzle on the fire.
High G.P.M. (gallons per minute) with
Low P. S. I. (pounds per square inch)

often used as transfer, dewatering or trash pumps

High Volume Low Pressure

High Pressure Low Volume

Rule of Thumb: deliver water at 50–70 psi at the Fire Nozzle on the fire.
High P.S.I. (pounds per square inch)

specifically used in fire fighting & high pressure wash down applications

Which Pump Type Should I Choose?

For the purpose of Initial Attack Fire Control, High Pressure Low Volume pumps are the most effective and desirable units for most fire fighting applications.

The rule of thumb is to be able to deliver water at 50–70 P.S.I at the Fire Nozzle on the fire. In order to achieve this there are a number of factors which affects the P.S.I. outcome:

  • Distance from the water source to the areas to be protected
  • Fire Hose Size
  • Elevation
  • Number of dwellings and out buildings to be protected.
  • Number of accessories that may be added from time to time, accessories such as a foam unit or a sprinkler package.

All land properties are not the same.  Each property should be evaluated in order to match the proper pump type and size required. To this end, Initial Attack Fire Solutions can help you to make the right choice.

Your High Pressure Fire Pumps should be as light and portable as possible. Highly mobile, it should be easily moved by one person without too much difficulty and should also be completely ready to go. That is to say, fire hose, nozzle, suction hose and foot valve & strainer all in one package, essentially a package that can be deployed in a moments notice.

When a Wildfire is imminent… minutes count.

Do You Need A Fire Pump?

No one is totally exempt from fire. Fire can strike at a moment's notice! The first few minutes count; don’t count on someone else to come to your rescue. Take the initiative.  Attack the fire and possibly help protect nearby buildings, dwellings—perhaps, even snuff out the fire.

Soak down the land around your valued property from flying hot burning embers that can come from a far off adjacent wildfire.  Take control and protect yourself, family and friends.

You can make a difference.
